GFS Winnipeg began as a family farm-based gardening operation during the 1930's under the name "F.M. Tamagi and Sons." The company grew and sold its own fresh produce door to door to the homes and businesses around Lethbridge, Alberta. This market gardening business grew steadily on a reputation of high quality. Nearing the end of the 1940's, the family decided to focus their sole concern on the marketing and distribution of produce in Calgary. The GFS partnership was born.
In January of 2002 when GFS Winnipegwas purchased by Gordon Food Service, it marked a new beginning with a new family at the helm.
Gordon Food Service (GFS) is the largest privately owned, family-run foodservice distributor in North America, ranked in the top 100 private U.S. companies by Forbes Magazine for the last four years. Dan Gordon (President and CEO), Jim Gordon (COO) and John Gordon Jr. (Secretary and Treasurer) represent the fourth generation of Gordons to manage the business since its founding over 100 years ago in 1897.
In March 2002, Gordon Food Service sought to expand their services from coast to coast, and acquired the Vancouver based SERCA Pacific. This new addition took back the original name of Neptune Food Service, which originally began in 1965.
GFS Winnipeg had grown to become one of the largest independent foodservice distributors in Canada. The only true total supply foodservice source in the industry, servicing over 5,000 customers in Western Canada.
Our warehouses are designed to service restaurants, cafeterias, industrial caterers, convenience stores, hospitals and nursing homes with everything from grocery, frozen food, beverages, fresh produce, fresh meat & seafood, and dairy product to equipment & smallwares.
GFS Winnipeg's service area extends across Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Northern Ontario, into Eastern British Columbia. Over 900 team members are totally committed to providing the utmost in customer service.

Gordon Food Service USA is the largest privately held foodservice distributor in North America. GFS has over 6,500 employees, and operates with leading edge technology, in-house programming and a fully automated warehouse.
In 1994, Gordon Food Service entered the Canadian marketplace by purchasing Maple Leaf Food Service in Ontario and Quebec. In 1995 Gordon Food Service merged with Distal of Beauport, Quebec in order to serve the Quebec market and later that year with Finlay Greenwood of Hamilton to expand their Ontario base.
In December 2001 Gordon Food Service announced the letter of intent to acquire GFS Winnipeg, a family owned business which began in the 1930’s. GFS is a broad line distributor based in Calgary, and serves over 3,000 customers in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.
